Technical Talk – FeCrAl Alloys Under The Microscope: Oxidation and Segregation at High Temperatures The Materials Engineering Division had organized a technical talk, “FeCrAl Alloys under the Microscope: Oxidation and Segregation at High Temperatures” by Prof Gordon J Tatlock of University of Liverpool, UK on 25th July 2012.
13 year 2 and year 1 students from Diploma in Technology (Materials and Manufacturing Engineering) attended the Dialogue with Prime Minister on 24th June 2012 at University Malaya
It is essential for students to relate what they have studied with the actual practice in industries, the Materials Engineering Society (MESO) had organized a factory visit to Khind-Mistral Industries Sdn Bhd, Sekinchan on 23rd May 2012.
Field Trip to Indian Temple Construction At Rawang Purpose of the Field Trip To understand the construction of an Indian Temple Details of the Field Trip The Hindu temple is located among one of the housing areas in Rawang. Students got to understand more about the construction development of a temple, the nature to be taken into account in temple designs and the meaning behind certain carvings and structures. The students participated in this tour also got to appreciate the Hindu artistic carvings, paintings and sculptures through direct communication with the professional sculptors present on that day. A brief tea break was generously provided by the hospitable committees upon leaving at noon.
Purpose of the Study Trip To expose the students with overseas’ architecture and to prepare for the upcoming assignments. Details of the Study Trip Only the 3rd Batch of Architecture student were on this trip, and were alsoaccompanied by 4 lecturers. This study trip was to prepare the students for their upcoming assignments for the Design Studio in the 2nd year 2nd semester. They had visited The City Gallery of Singapore to get an in-depth knowledge about the development of the country. The students were also able to verify the future development for the country from there. Another museum that were used for conducting precedent study was the Asian Civilization Museum, Singapore. As for the History of European Architecture, students were given different building to analyzed and then prepare a presentation for it. Besides being in the city, the students are then taken to Pulau Ubin, which is one of the few places in Singapore that had yet to be developed. The students will proceed their site analysis here for their upcoming museum project.
Purpose of the Competition To gain the knowledge about the strength of a structure and method to optimize it Details of the Egg Drop Competition With the new intake of architecture student, this competition was held to break the ice between the new juniors and the seniors by working together in this egg drop competition. Participants are required to construct a structure to hold and prevent egg from breaking after a fall. They were only allowed to use straw as the structure, and a maximum amount of straw were given. Tapes were allowed to connect the straw structure together. After the preparation was completed, participants had to drop their product on the first floor at block C. If the egg did not break, they are able to proceed to the second floor and so on until the forth floor.
Purpose of Fund Raising To raise fund for the society Details of Fund Raising By taking the opportunity of the starting of a new semester for the new intake,the architecture society had organized a fund raising in the college canteen 2’s foyer. We are able to obtain a partnership with Ding Tea to set up a booth, they would provide us with all the tools, machine and ingredient with no initial cost, but only take away 30% of the total profit. The whole members of the society were divided into groups and work by shifts. The fund raising was considered a success.
Field Trip to Architectural Office (PJ) & Bungalow Construction Site (Klang) Purpose of Field Trip To visit explore an architecture office and also the construction of a bungalow. Details of the Field Trip Students were lead by lecturers to visit the CSC Architectural office in Petaling Jaya. The office was once a terrace lot and then was renovated and converted into an office. The office utilizes elements of green architecture to provide a better quality of living and working in it. Students were also given different task in group and prepare a presentation for it. Later on, the students were brought to a constructing site of a bungalow. This allows the students to be expose in a real construction site, inside out. They were also given a few task to be completed and a presentation is needed.
Purpose TARCAS Night A farewell dinner held for the graduating seniors. TARCAS Night Details The 1st batch of TARC Architecture students are getting graduated from their Diploma course. The architecture society had organized a farewell party for them to mark their perseverance effort to complete the 3 year course. Both 1st year and 2nd year student were involved in preparing this event, which includes: decoration, foods, performances and games for entertainment. Souvenirs are given out to the lecturers and soon graduating seniors; there were also prizes that were given out for winners of the lucky draw and games. This TARCAS Night serves as a great opportunity for the 3 batch of students to interact with each other and creating a stronger bonding between them and also the lecturers.
Purpose of Study Trip To visit the cultural village and historical sites and building of Sarawak and also prepare for the upcoming assignment. Objective of Study Trip For the preparation for the 3rd year 1st semester’s assignment, the students are required to conduct a precedent study of a cultural center for the design studio and the historical buildings in Kuching for the History of Asian Architecture subject. Students were accompanied by the lecturers for the 4 days trip. The juniors were given a photography competition and also at the same time, observe the process of analyzing the site and building from their seniors. This study trip does not only allows students to be exposed to a different culture and architecture than in the city, but also able to forge a better relationship between the seniors, juniors and also lecturers.
